Important! What you should know before you renew your insurance (3/5) : 1st class car insurance vers
Renewing your 1st class car insurance soon?
When you see prices that are too good to be true, be careful! A few baht saved up front could result in a major cost to you if an accident should happen. The purpose of this series will be to share with you what to look out for to ensure you get the most out of the car insurance that you buy from Carpool or from any broker/insurer.
What is the difference between 1st class and 2+?
Based on consumer research we had conducted, we found that a lot of good drivers are starting to downgrade from a 1st class car insurance policy to a 2+ policy when they renew. With market-average premiums of 8,000 Baht for 2+ versus 16,000 Baht for 1st class, it’s not surprising that good drivers see the attraction of downgrading. But what exactly is the difference between the 1st class and 2+?
Although coverage will vary between different insurers and policies, here’s the general idea:
Why is this important?
When you look at the fine print, there are really two key distinctions between 1st class and 2+:
The sum insured is usually much lower for 2+ what is sum insured?
2+ covers “collision with another vehicle” but not “damage to own car”
Beyond sum insured, the definition of collision with another vehicle is extremely important because it only covers damage to your car if you can identify the other driver. What this means is that even though you are a good driver, you are still exposed to risks that are not in your control. Some examples:
You park your car on the side of the road and come back to find that someone had backed into the front of your car breaking both of your headlights and didn’t stick around to say they’re sorry
You drive along and suddenly a motorcycle hits and breaks your side mirror and simply drives away before you are able to get their license plate (this has happened to me twice)
These are just a few examples and we are sure there are many more. But more importantly, in both of these instances, your 2+ policy will not cover the cost of repairs!
